ABSTRACT

The term authority is not one young children would normally use. They have a clear understanding, however, that some people can be ‘the boss’ or ‘in charge’ and can tell others what to do. Enquiring into this concept with young children should enable them to engage with some ways people express their authority, and help them recognise that people have authority for a variety of reasons. This concept or key idea will form a foundation for exploring the concepts of leadership and prophethood when they are older. For religious education the concept of authority is of fundamental importance. Key religious figures have demonstrated their authority, and it is this that makes them stand out above others. In this book the authority of Jesus is explored within Christianity. It also provides the following examples from other religions:

How did the Buddha show his authority?

How did Mohammed (pbuh) show his authority?

How did Guru Nanak show his authority?
