ABSTRACT

A central theme in Gunther Kress’ work is his approach to connect a theory of communication to changes of society that have taken place during the last century. It is a common conception among scholars that today’s society is marked by instability, provisionality, and fluidity (Hannerz, 1992). Due to the political movement in the Western world towards neo liberalism/neo conservatism, the globally oriented market has replaced ideals of shared social values. Political and social changes are reflected in school politics, with trends to promote well-defined standards and goals. In that context, it seems important to discuss how Gunther Kress’ work can be seen as an ethical response to current political situations.
