ABSTRACT

There are any number of cost-analysis and cost-cutting strategies that can be borrowed from the private sector and applied to the management of educational costs. These strategies include automation, substitution of part-time labor for full-time labor, and outsourcing. Virtually any activity can be reduced, eliminated, or consolidated. Campuses, like factories, can be closed. However, it is important to realize that for-profit organizations have been developing these strategies for many years, making many mistakes and learning many lessons along the way. If misapplied, these tools will deliver poor results, just as they sometimes do in the private sector.
