ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, philanthropic support for colleges and universities has become critical due to the economic recession, and increasingly so for public institutions as public resources have declined. Even in times of robust economic growth, the general feeling among higher education policy makers is that there will not be a significant return of public financial support for higher education institutions. While private colleges and universities have long relied on philanthropic support for survival, many public institutions have only recently realized the need to focus attention on attracting private support.
