ABSTRACT

Playing squash is largely accomplished with energy supplied by means of aerobic mechanisms. Although the activity during play is non-rhythmic, a high level of strain is maintained on the oxygen transport system. Mean heart rates of squash players observed during match-play have varied from 147 to 161 beats/min or 79 to 88% of the subjects' maximum heart rates (Reilly, 1990). As a consequence of this, it is likely that regular and frequent participation in squash provides a physiological training stimulus to the heart and to the oxygen transport system.
