ABSTRACT

There is a strong relationship between psychological states and sports performance. Anxiety is one psychological factor which has a great effect on human behaviour, especially through competition. The effect of anxiety may be dependent on the degree of anxiety experienced. If anxiety motivates the learning of adaptive behaviour, it serves a useful purpose. Because anxiety is so pervasive in human life, particularly in social situations, we can hardly hope to abolish it. It is important, at least, to harness this powerful motive for constructive rather than destructive purposes. Spielberger (1972) described two kinds of anxiety: anxiety as a trait and anxiety as a state. Anxiety state is related to stress situations like sport competitions.
