ABSTRACT

The Golan Heights is a region of approximately 1,700 square kilometers, ranging from the Yarmuk River in the south and the foothills of Mount Hermon along the Sa’ar River, up to the Banias River in the north. Its eastern physical-geographical border is the al-Elan River in the southeast and the Roked River in the northeast. The Jordan Valley delimits the Golan in the west, from the Banias River in the north along the line dividing the Golan slopes and the Hula Valley, to the point where the Jordan River flows out of the valley, and from there, along the Jordan highlands to Lake Kinneret. On the northeastern side of the Kinneret, the Golan is bordered by the Betekha Valley, and on the southeastern side, a sharp and well-defined rift lined by almost vertical cliffs, 400–500 meters high, constitutes the geographic border to the Yarmuk.
