ABSTRACT

Railways and steam engines (locomotives) have fascinated people for generations. The sight, sound and smell of a steam engine is a powerful, enduring image. Film makers have capitalized on this in various successful films, including the 1937 Oh! Mr Porter, starring Will Hay, the 1952 Titfield Thunderbolt, and the 1968 Railway Children. More recently, the Revd W. Awdry’s Thomas the Tank Engine stories have continued to be a resounding success with younger children.
