ABSTRACT

This chapter will present a detailed case study of educator cheating on a state-wide accountability testing program. The perspective of this chapter is not solely on the cheating itself and how it was discovered by sophisticated statistical techniques. It is also on how this scandal played out in the public arena – primarily news reporting. It is certainly likely that many of the newspaper articles did not represent the situation as accurately as would be expected in a scientific investigation. However, this chapter is not an independent investigation, replication, or reanalysis of data, or even significant verification or denial of claims made by any of the involved parties.
