ABSTRACT
Lasers can be solid, liquid, or gas devices. The population inversion needed by a laser can be induced by optical pumping by a light source as simple as a flashlight or by light from another laser, chemical reactions, or gas discharges. The light emitted by some lasers is powerful enough to cut through many solids. Lasers today are used in communications, printing, welding, surgery, and other fields.
