ABSTRACT

Key was speaking on behalf of Pipedown, the Campaign for Freedom from Piped Music, but suggested that there would be widespread public support for the measure. He cited a 1997 Sunday Times survey that found piped music to be number three in the list of things most hated about modern life. He noted that following a survey of its users, Gatwick Airport had stopped playing canned music. He drew on medical findings. “All uninvited noise raises the blood pressure and depresses the immune system.” He added information from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. “The commonest type of offending noise is not pneumatic drills, cars or aircraft but music.”
