ABSTRACT

Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are usually designed by the SENCO or a member of the learning support team for pupils who are at School Action Plus, or who have a Statement of SEN. These will often describe generic targets to do with literacy, social skills and behaviour. It is important that science teachers take note of these targets and incorporate them into their planning. For example, if a pupil's target is to learn to read and spell five new words every week, some of those words could be linked to science. If a target is to 'stay on task' for ten minutes at a time, the science teacher and/or the TA can observe the pupil's behaviour in science lessons and report back to the SENCO about concentration and task completion. In this way, a coherent approach is achieved and everyone on the staff is working towards the same goals.
