ABSTRACT
The Mandir is an obviously religious institution, whose prime objective is to function as a place of worship for Hindus in the area. However, alongside this temple there is a different and potentially rival institution—the Edinburgh Indian Association—and the construction of an Edinburgh Hindu community can only be understood within the context of the relations between these two institutions.
