ABSTRACT

From the pharmacokinetic point of view, lithium is a simple drug. It is not metabolized, and it is not bound to proteins. Unless used in a special formulation, it is absorbed rapidly from the gastrointestinal system and eliminated almost exclusively via the kidneys in a manner mostly dependent on serum levels. For understanding the behavior of lithium in the body, it is helpful although simplifying to remember lithium as being handled similarly to sodium.
