ABSTRACT
Bipolar disorders are among the mental health conditions with the highest health-care and social costs. In the USA, the total annual costs of these disorders have been estimated at US $45 billion1, of which only 15% are due to direct medical expenses. These data are based on an assumed prevalence of bipolar illness of 1.3%, or 2 million patients.
