ABSTRACT

The most effective interventions with children aged 6 and over have involved access to structured exercise programmes. The purpose of this chapter is to explain each activity in detail and identify targets which indicate the child's mastery of that particular skill. It may be several weeks before the child is able to achieve the specified target but he would be set individual targets in the preceding weeks. For example: if the child is able to balance independently on his right foot for two seconds the final target could be to achieve 10+ seconds. The first week's target might be four seconds, extending it as he develops his skills. When the recommended target is achieved the child should move on to the next activity.
