ABSTRACT

The subject of this paper is to discuss the significance of the Jewish element in the origin and early development of Christianity in Roman North Africa. What will be said here about the importance of this Jewish element in Africa will no doubt enable us to discover a number of similarities with its importance in Georgia. From Tamila Mgaloblishvili's contribution to the book Juden und Christen in der Antike, 1 and also from some other publications, 2 one learns that in the first stages of Christianity in Georgia, and in its later developments as well, there was a strong Jewish influence. This short paper will focus on the most important data from Africa during the first centuries of the Christian era, Especially the rise of Christianity in this ancient Roman province, with its famous capital Carthage and its tens of thousands of Jews, will be considered.
