ABSTRACT

The descriptions that follow are intended to provide an account of all known editions printed by Antonio Gardano in the second decade of his publishing career. The basic principles I have followed in preparing these descriptions are: 1) to allow users to reconstruct as much as possible about an edition without having it in their hands; 2) to enable anyone dealing with an edition to identify it exactly and to distinguish it from other editions, issues, or states; 3) to place the contents, through concordances, within the transmission history of each piece; 4) to place the edition within the publishing history of that particular collection and repertory and within the overall output of the publisher; and 5) to indicate surviving copies, and to give any information about individual copies that distinguishes them and sheds light on the reception of the music.
