ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to discuss some issues relevant to women in Islam and will focus on two perspectives: gender studies and human rights. Though these are closely interrelated, with some identifiable developments from one to the other – for example gender studies scholars raising topics which are then addressed by human rights scholars – they have been kept separate here as I believe that neither gender studies nor human rights are necessarily inclusive of one another. Both are, however, critical to understanding issues revolving around women in the modern Muslim context.
