ABSTRACT
Anyone embarking on writing a history of Turkey with a focus on Islam faces a cluster of methodological challenges. The ambitious task is to write history without succumbing too greatly to the paradigmatic conceptual knowledge of our modern age, which is shaped by categories like nation, state, and religion – categories which do not always do justice to pre-modern realities.
