ABSTRACT
Summary Population ageing and increased longevity challenge profoundly the current balance between older and younger generations and between formal and informal systems of care. There is ample evidence, though, about the increasingly important role that family caregivers play around the world and the tension this creates between the autonomy of family members and the responsibility of the state to its citizens. Currently, family members form the backbone of long-term care under a variety of welfare systems.
