ABSTRACT
Introduction Sustainability is now a generic word to express the need for a long-term perspective where there is reduced demand on environmental resources and on environmental sinks; it also expresses the need to make the necessary changes in ways that are economically and socially beneficial. The approach taken in this chapter is to stress that cities cannot be considered sustainable if they are automobile dependent.
