ABSTRACT
Introduction This chapter examines the extent to which land use planning can influence travel patterns and how planning might be able to reduce travel. Although other studies have examined this issue before, many have only examined the influence of a small number of land use characteristics and most have not taken account of any socio-economic reasons for the variations in travel patterns in different areas. Previous research has often assumed that there is a simple cause and effect relationship between land use and travel patterns, in which various land use characteristics (such as density, population size or the presence of local services and facilities) directly influence travel patterns.
