ABSTRACT

Sustainable development, quality of life and the new urban paradigms: the compact city and dispersed urban development It is predicted that, by the year 2000, almost half of the world's population will live in urban areas, where most resources will be consumed and most pollution and waste will be produced. Current patterns of urban development and human activity have led to environmental degradation, and have created a serious threat to continued human existence and to the sustainability of life on earth. It has been argued that there are strong links between urban form and sustainable development. Since energy consumption for transportation, and pollution, are two crucial issues in the context of sustainability, the question of the influence of particular urban forms on trip generation and travel patterns has attracted considerable attention from academics and governments as well as from town planners and architects.
