ABSTRACT

There is a crisis in our nation’s behavioral healthcare system. Many factors contribute to this crisis, including financial, regulatory, and cultural issues. One of the most glaring problems in this crisis is the corporate healthcare industry’s practice of placing earnings and exorbitant profits above the public interest at the expense of quality services to those in need. There is another significant factor contributing to the poor quality of services provided to patients suffering from behavioral disorders: a significant shift of behavioral healthcare from specialists, such as psychologists and psychiatrists, to primary care physicians.
