ABSTRACT

This chapter captures themes that emerged within the case studies and which were not summarized earlier in Chapters 1 and Chapter 2. Furthermore, I explore some larger overarching questions that are raised by the case studies, building on Maria Maisto’s contribution (Chapter 11). As a reminder, Chapter 1 speaks to: creating a vision for change that acknowledges the diversity of non-tenure track faculty with different contracts, motivations, and interests; addressing policies, practices, and principles that make up the overall campus culture; and developing context-based changes that reflect the institutional culture and needs. Chapter 2 describes strategies used to create better policies and practices and which unfold during the different phases of institutionalization. These different phases were also touched upon at the end of each case study, giving the reader more insight into the institution’s progress on change. In addition, the reader was given key points and key questions to help understand the change process. These areas will not be reviewed in this chapter, and I ask readers to seek these points within the earlier chapters. I begin and end this chapter by focusing on motivation for change, as I believe this is a primary challenge that remains.
