ABSTRACT

A convenient introduction to the problems of this chapter will be provided by an examination of Braithwaite's theory of probability. This is a doubly desirable task since our own theory is very similar to Braithwaite's and indeed was greatly influenced by the latter. It is therefore most necessary to compare the two positions and to explain how far they are in agreement and where and why they differ. Braithwaite's theory is expounded in Scientific Explanation, Chapters V-VII. I will now attempt a brief outline of his position.
