ABSTRACT
In a country, such as Israel, whose population includes a wide variety of ethnic groups, problems of cross-cultural communication often impede the adequate identification and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders by western educated professionals. Research dealing with the relation between health and culture have shown that culture influences:
the conceptualisation of illness;
the criteria for symptoms;
the expression of misfortune and conflict;
the expression of pathology;
the expectations regarding treatment. 2
