ABSTRACT

In this liturgy, the most wide-spread form results from the grouping of six melodic units into a musical phrase, corresponding to three alternations between the soloist or soloists and the choir ( 3 times 2 ) . 2 This binary organisation is systematically contradicted by the organisation of the melodic units , which mostly functions on a ternary principle ( 2 times 3 ) . In other words , in each phrase , the musical material is reiterated twice.
