ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to delineate the supply chain and markets for counterfeit goods. As I will show, this is a global market that is at once quite visible and “under the table.” Distributors and retailers go to great lengths to market and transport counterfeit items under the radar and to avoid detection by the authorities. In turn, the regulatory sectors of China and Taiwan have innovated new ways of pursuing counterfeiters, or at least creating the illusion that they are pursuing intellectual property right violations for trademark holders. In addition to describing the very vibrant markets for counterfeit goods, I examine the consumption of fake goods and their meaning to consumers around the world.
