ABSTRACT

Yesterday Mr. Williams had students in his world geography class read an article dealing with a current issue in sub-Saharan Africa. He broke the class into three groups of seven or eight students, each group to read different articles. The first group read an article related to the impact of AIDS on children; the second group read an article on working conditions in a mine; the third read an article on post-apartheid race relations. He had asked each group to be prepared to give a report to the large group so the rest of the class could learn about the topics they didn’t read. It didn’t work. Some students complained that they had to do all the work, other students complained that they weren’t given a chance to do anything because of the “know it all” student, and others just let it all pass as they looked out the window.
