ABSTRACT
The only truly denominational political party in Weimar Germany was the Centre Party. Closely linked to and dominated by the Catholic Church, it considered itself to have a holy duty to protect 'the immutable moral norms of. . . civic laws'.12 Its role in German politics was considerable in that it provided the only real continuity in the many coalition governments from 1920 to 1932. In the Weimar Republic it filled the post of Chancellor nine times.
