ABSTRACT

With regard to this [some] say: 'It is the measure of a span by which that (Le. the intermediate world [between heaven and earth]) does not touch this sphere here, the measure of a span by which [it does not touch] yonder [sphere].' And further [some others] say: 'Only by this much as is the amnion of a cow who has calved does it not touch this sphere here, by this much [does it not touch] yonder [ sphere] .' And further [some others] say: 'Only by this much as is ... does it not touch this sphere here, only by this much [does it not touch] yonder [sphere].' ... And with regard to this [some] forsooth say: 'Verily just as two wheels are kept apart by the axle, so the two spheres here are kept apart by that. It touches this sphere here directly, so to say, yonder [sphere] directly, so to say.'
