ABSTRACT
In my opinion, Yaska is more closely allied with the tradition of the Padapii(has and their concerns. While the Padapii(has break down continuous textual passages into their constituent words, and occasionally the words into their constituent morphological parts, Yaska is in general interested in offering etymological breakdown of words given in the NighaIJ(u, and other incidental words. Essentially, his aim is to account for the meaning of a given word by referring to its possible meaningful constituents, generally a root and an affix. While he shows awareness of processes like substitution, transformation, augmenting, deletion, etc., his main target is not to systematically build up words from their given morphological constituents, but to break down given words into their constituents.
