ABSTRACT

Seven-year-old Cindi was quietly playing with Legos in a waiting area I share with Dr. Loewenstein, who directs the Sheppard Pratt Health System Trauma Disorders Program, an inpatient program for the treatment of traumatized and dissociative adults. “My adult patient waiting to see me was quite upset by your patient today,” Dr. Loewenstein tells me. “Did she throw something, have a tantrum, wet her pants?” I wondered, though I had heard nothing unusual outside of my offi ce that day. Before I had a chance to ask what caused the upset, Dr. Loewenstein explained, “She is getting help when she is only seven. My patient wants to know why no one helped her at that age. If only they had . . .”
