ABSTRACT

TheChurchofSt.SaviourinChora,calledinTurkish KariyeCam.ii,isafterHaghiaSophiathemostinteresting ByzantinechurchintheCitynotsomuchforthebuilding itself,prettyasthatis,asbecauseofthesuperbseries ofmosaicsandfrescoeswhichitpreservesandwhichhave beenmagnificentlyrestoredandcleanedbytheByzantine InstituteofAmerica(*).Thenameofthechurch"in Chora"meansinthecountrybecausetheveryancient monasterytowhichitwasattachedwasoutsidethe Constantinianwalls;laterwhenitwasincludedwithinthe Theodosianwalls,thenameremained(compareSt.Martin's intheFieldsorSt.GermaindesPres)butwasgivena symbolicsense:Christasthe"country"or·"land"ofthe LivingandtheBlessedVirginasthe''dwelling-place"of theUncontainable,astheyarereferredtointhemosaics inthechurch.
