ABSTRACT
We can now assume that we are making a journey, or transition, into a different mode of consciousness, one which is largely inhibited and excluded by our everyday perceptual framework. Thus our task involves a translation of the nature of that alternate consciousness back through the everyday framework. It has become clear that the whole meaning system of the natural attitude is implicated in the exclusion of another mode of consciousness. To be authentic, our translation process must therefore be rooted in the altered meaning system of our excluded experience rather than in the meaning system of the everyday or natural attitude. In Wolff’s terms (1976) it is our entire meaning system we must surrender. The ‘catch’ will lie in communicating the process of such a transition, and in the expression of a differently based meaning system.
