ABSTRACT
Introduction Age and sex are fundamental categories in the organization of social life in all human societies. Each of us on first meeting a stranger mentally classifies that individual as a man or woman. Because ageing and sexual differentation are biological processes the social psychological construction of concepts such as young and old, masculine and feminine is easily overlooked.
