ABSTRACT

Introduction The Turlcic language referred to here as Yellow Uyghur - Sari'y Uiyur or Sariy Yuyur - is known in China as 'Western Yughur' (Xibu Yuguyu). It is used by Yughur people [so'r~y jo'yur] who live in the western part of Sunan county (see pp. 9-10). Yughurs living in the eastern parts of the same county use Eastern Yughur or Ingar [~IJ'gor], a Mongolic language. These Yughurs call themselves U~ro jOImr] 'Yellow Uyghur', while their Turkic-speaking relatives refer to them as [xo'ro jO'Hor] 'Black Uyghur'. Mandarin Chinese is the language of the Yughurs who live in the townships of Huangnibao and Qiantan of the Minghua district. Chinese serves as the lingua franca between the Turkic-, Mongolic-and Chinese-speaking Yughurs.
