ABSTRACT

On my first visit to this home, in January 1993, Armenia was suffering from the effects of an economic blockade imposed by Azerbaijan with the tacit cooperation of Turkey. Gas supplies had been cut off, so there was no heating apart from a few stoves on which wood was being burned. Despite the much more severe economic situation as compared with that of the Communist period, the changed attitude of the director meant that the mortality rate had been brought down because the children were being treated as having value in themselves.
