ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we explore the notion that specific domains of discourse involve the use of language in pragmatically-specialised ways. To support this idea, we draw on real language from different specialised contexts such as casual conversation, healthcare communication, the classroom, service encounters (shops) and soap operas.
