ABSTRACT

Conversion In the early stages of growth all religious movements rely on methods of conversion for the recruitment of new members. Niebuhr (1954) defined movements at this stage of development as sects, and went on to point out that in the strict sense the term could only be applied to the first generation of a religious organisation. Religious organisations in their second and subsequent generations come to rely on the recruitment of the children of existing members as the main source of new members.
