ABSTRACT
Recently religion, and not only new religious movements, has become a controversial subject in America, not just amongst sociologists but more widely. The religious right and the Moral Majority have been described as anti-American and as endangering fundamental freedoms in the writings of Conway and Sigelman (1983) and McGuire (1982) as well as in the popular media.
