ABSTRACT

Citizenship is not simply a curriculum subject; the creation of ‘responsible citizens’ is now a stated aim of the National Curriculum (QCDA, 2009), with civic participation highlighted as a measure of its success. Its status has thus become firmly established. Where this leaves history is open to debate, especially at a time when the place of history appears increasingly tenuous (see Historical Association, 2009). This chapter seeks to explore some of the issues in the relationship between history and citizenship, and may well pose more questions than answers!
