ABSTRACT

Human development, simply stated, is the change that occurs in human beings over the course of the lifespan. The process, however, is not so simple. Human development is multidimensional and complex. For these reasons, it is not appropriate to generalize developmental processes and stages across cultures or ethnicities because some developmental characteristics are socially engineered or thwarted by culturally engendered developmental processes. This section will look at key developmental theories and general developmental characteristics of elementary, middle, and high school students.
