Pierre Rey’s The Greek This novel is something of a rarity, in that it is translated from the French and stands as ‘Europe’s greatest fiction bestseller of the year’. The year was 1973, although the book really took off in the Anglo-Saxon market with its translation in 1974 and the hype about the related film starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset. Since it is ‘the Giant Inside Novel of Life among the Jet Set’ in the Riviera, Paris, London, Washington, ‘from superyachts to international palaces’, a European origin is not entirely inappropriate.
