ABSTRACT

William Labov, in ‘The Logic of Non-Standard English’, (1972) does not actually discuss Basil Bernstein’s writing on the language of working-class and lower-class children. Instead, he deals with a ‘notion…drawn from’, and with ‘interpretations of’ these writings. From the start, then, Labov practices an indirectness or distancing of his topic.
