ABSTRACT
Austin’s work is important because it proposes and, more centrally, uses a method of analysis concerned primarily with ordinary, or non-philosophical, language. Instead of engaging in the parlour game of arraying professional concepts against each other in order to achieve easy victories in mock battles, Austin found it more interesting to study ordinary language utterances.
