ABSTRACT

Not all parts of the CJS are working well. In July, 2010 a National Audit Office (NAO) report into financial management at the Ministry of Justice (which is responsible for the CJS) revealed that Courts in England and Wales were owed £1.3bn in unpaid fines, confiscation and compensation orders. The NAO said the department was not operating ‘best practice’ and did not fully understand its own finances.
