ABSTRACT

After studying this chapter you will be able to:

Identify the potential advantages of the planning process for the business’s success, competitive advantage and sustainability.

Assess the traditional written business plan through a different lens and compare it to other planning alternatives; understand that the business plan is not a stand-alone tool and consider the planning alternatives as appropriate options.

Use the major themes of planning processes to establish and then continually assess the business’s goals, communicate the business’s goals to the related communities, and lead the business toward achievement of those goals.

Realize the importance of the value statement, the mission statement and the break-even analysis and trace how these work in the business context.

Combine ‘unusual’ processes in planning (e.g., creativity, innovation, intuition and emotion) to gain a more flexible and dynamic business and individual capabilities in the face of a changing environment.
